This is a selective list of video holdings in the American University Library. Filmographies are created by doing multiple keyword searches in the catalog to capture as many titles on a topic as possible.

The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford. 2008. 1 videodisc (160 min.). Everyone in 1880s America knows Jesse James. He's the nation's most notorious criminal and is being hunted by the law in 10 states. He's also the land's greatest hero, lauded as a Robin Hood by the public. No one knows of Robert Ford, at least not yet. But the ambitious 19-year-old aims to change that. He befriends Jesse and rides with his gang. And if that doesn't bring Ford fame, he will have to find a deadlier way. Friendship becomes rivalry and the quest for fame becomes obsession.  HU DVD 5606

Bad day at Black Rock. 2005. 1 videodisc (81 min.). A one-armed stranger arrives in a tiny desert town, the locals possessing a dark  past they want to keep secret, by any means necessary.   HU DVD 7245

The ballad of Little Jo. 2003. 1 videodisc (122 min.). Based on a true story, this is the tale of Josephine Monaghan, a young woman of the mid-19th century who is thrown out of her parents' home after being seduced by the family's portrait photographer and giving birth to an illegitimate child. Josephine quickly learns that young, female, pretty, and alone are a bad combination for life in the wild west. In her desperation to survive, Josephine disguises herself as "Jo", a young man, and struggles to make a life for herself in a dingy frontier mining town. Can "Little Jo" live and love without revealing his/her secret?  HU DVD 7485

Blazing saddles. 1997. 1 videodisc (93 min.). The new sheriff and his sidekick, retired gunfighter Waco Kid, protect the town of Rock Ridge from the men who want to run the railroad through the town.  HU DVD 673

Brokeback Mountain. Focus Features four-star collection. 2006. 1 videodisc (ca. 135 min.). It's 1963, a time in the United States when life was simple, straightforward and the lines between the sexes and sex roles were crisply drawn and severely delineated. Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist find themselves thrown together when they are hired to tend sheep in the remote area of Brokeback Mountain, Wyoming. Because of the job, the two are forced to spend many hours together alone in the wild. Ennis and Jack are inexorably drawn to each other through their proximity, loneliness and through a shared lack of tenderness and emotion in their lives and are emotionally, physically and psychically bonded to each other almost from the start.   HU DVD 1924

Broken arrow. Western Classics. 1993. 1 videocassette (93 min.). Amidst the bitter struggle between white men and Indians, Tom Jeffords believes the Indians are treated unfairly. He befriends Cochise, the leader of the Apaches, and arranges a truce. He is called upon by a U.S. Army general to negotiate a peace treaty. After fulfilling his mission, he, his Indian wife and Cochise are targets of a renegade ambush.   HU DVD 7878

Buck and the preacher. Western classics. 2000. 1 videodisc (102 min.). An ex-Union Army Cavalry sergeant becomes a scout for freed slaves heading to the Colorado frontier. Tagging along with him are his wife and a Bible-thumping con artist. Attacked by racist bounty hunters, Buck and his followers must summon courage in order to help settle the wild west.  HU DVD 6129

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. 2002. 1 videodiscs (110 min.). Two legendary outlaws keep one step ahead of the law until they are finally tracked down to Bolivia.  HU DVD 2177

Cheyenne autumn. John Ford film collection. 2006. 1 videodisc (156 min.). Three-hundred starving Cheyenne men, women and children, forcibly resettled in the barren wastelands of Oklahoma, set out on a desperate 1500-mile trek back to their Yellowstone homeland. A true-life story.  HU DVD 7283

Cimarron. 2006. 1 videodisc (123 min.). Epic western about the Cravat family settling the Oklahoma prairie. Yancy Cravat is a newspaperman and lawyer who helps found the town of Osage. An adventurer, he finds town-life stifling and seeks his thrills even further into the frontier. His wife ends up becoming a town leader when his absences leave her no other choice.   HU DVD 1998

Comanche station. The films of Budd Boetticher: Films of Budd Boetticher. 2008. 1 videodisc (73 min.). An odyssey with Randolph Scott as a loner who makes a trade with Indians for a white woman they've kidnapped, but finds that getting her home is not going to be so easy.  HU DVD 6145

The cowboy and the lady. M-G-M movie legends. 2007. 1 videodisc (92 min.). When bored Palm Beach rich girl Mary Smith convinces her housemaids to take her along on a triple blind date, she never expects to meet the cowpoke of her dreams. When she convinces him she's a struggling house servant, the unlikely couple fall head-over-spurs and hastily marry aboard a ship to Galveston. But rodeo life doesn't suit a lady and when Mary returns home, her new husband finds a shock waiting for him-- and a host of in-the-dark in-laws ready for a lesson in homespun love.   HU DVD 7501

Dances with wolves. 2003. 2 videodiscs (ca. 236 min.). Rewarded for his heroism in the Civil War, Lt. John Dunbar wants to see the American frontier before it is gone. Assigned to an abandoned fort with a Sioux tribe as his only neighbor, he overcomes the language barrier and mutual fear and distrust to become a friend of the tribe. But his knowledge of their ultimate fate forces him to make a crucial decision.  HU DVD 1950

Dead man. 2000. 1 videodisc (121 min.). A young man in search of a fresh start embarks on an exciting journey to a new town never realizing the danger that lies ahead. But when a heated love triangle ends in double murder, he finds himself a wanted man running scared until a mysterious loner teaches him to face the dangers that follow a "dead man.".   HU DVD 1429

Deadwood the complete series. 2008. 19 videodiscs (2160 min.). The town of Deadwood, South Dakota is a lawless sinkhole of crime and corruption. Into this uncivilized outpost ride a disillusioned and bitter ex-lawman, Wild Bill Hickok, and Seth Bullock, a man hoping to find a new start for himself. Both men find themselves quickly on opposite sides of the legal and moral fence from Al Swearengen, saloon owner, hotel operator, and incipient boss of Deadwood. The lives of these three intertwine with many others, the high-minded and the low-lifes who populate Deadwood in the late 1870's.   HU DVD 7101-7129

Destry rides again. Universal western collection: Universal western collection. 2003. 1 videodisc (95 min.). As Destry, a mild-mannered deputy who doesn't like guns, Stewart is called to restore order to the hopelessly corrupt frontier town of Bottleneck. Though reluctant to undertake such an enormous task, he's soon roped into action after meeting the seductive Frenchy (Dietrich), an alluring saloon girl who belts out unforgettable show-stoppers like "The Boys in the Back Room," while winning the hero's heart.  HU DVD 6576

Dodge City. 2005. 1 videodisc (100 min.). In his first of eight Westerns, Flynn is as able with a six-shooter as he was with a swashbuckler's sword. He confronts lynch mobs, slams outlaws into jail and escapes (along with co-star Olivia de Havilland) a fiery, locked railroad car.  HU DVD 6596 and Streaming video

Duel in the sun. Metro Goldwyn Mayer western legends: Western legends. 2004. 1 videodisc (146 min.). A woman taken into the home of a wealthy rancher becomes the subject of a tug-of-war between his two sons.  HU DVD 6245

El Mariachi. 2003. 1 videodisc (81 min.). All he wants is to be a mariachi, like his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather before him. But the town he thinks will bring him luck brings only a curse--of deadly mistaken  identity.  A stranger enters a small town in Mexico. Dressed in black and carrying a guitar, he is a singer named El Mariachi looking for a gig. Also in town is a revenge-crazed drug lord named Azul, who also wears black and carries a guitar and who is at war with his ex-partner Moco. El Mariachi is mistaken for Azul and has to dodge Moco's thugs. Looking for a job, he meets and falls in love with Domino, but she is a favorite of Moco. To defend himself, El Mariachi has to trade in his guitar for a gun.  HU DVD 1982

The far country. Universal western collection. 2003. 1 videodisc (97 min.). A solid western saga set against the colorful, scenic backdrop of Alaskan mining camps.   HU DVD 6244

The films of Budd Boetticher. Collector's choice: Collector's choice (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (Firm)). 2008. 5 videodiscs (380 min.). The Tall T: When he and a pair of newlyweds are kidnapped by bandits, Randolph Scott must use his wiles to keep them off alive while quietly turning the gunmen against each other. Decision at sundown: Randolph Scott rides into the town of Sundown determined to kill the man he believes responsible for his wife's death--but things don't go exactly as he planned. Buchanan rides alone: In a change of pace, light-hearted entry, Scott finds himself in an incredibly corrupt border town and ends up in the middle of a blood feud between both sides of the family--neither of which trust him! Ride lonesome: The first of the series in CinemaScope has Scott as a bounty hunter bringing the killer to justice--bedeviled by outlaws who want the reward themselves, the killer's brother who wants to rescue him, and Indians attacking at every turn. Comanche station: The last of the series is an odyssey with Scott as a loner who makes a trade with Indians for a white woman they've kidnapped, but getting her home is not going to be so easy.  HU DVD 6141-6145

A fistful of dollars. 1999. 1 videodisc (100 min.). A mysterious gunman has just arrived in San Miguel, a grim and dusty border town where two rival bands of smugglers are terrorizing the impoverished citizens. A master of the "quick-draw", the stranger soon receives lucrative offers of employment from each gang.  HU DVD 287   

For a few dollars more.  The man with no name, trilogy. 1999. 1 videodisc (131 min.). Western drama in which two bounty hunters join forces to capture an outlaw gang leader.  HU DVD 288

Fort Apache. 2006. 1 videodisc (128 min.). This classic portrait of the old West depicts a military martinet cavalry officer whose by-the-book tactics and ignorance of the western frontier cause him to lead his men into a fatal Apache ambush.  HU DVD 5185

Forty guns. 2005. 1 videodisc (79 min.). Tougher-than-nails landowner Jessica Drummond has ruled over her county in Arizona with such power that even the local sheriff won't stand up to her.  And when gunslinger-turned-U.S. marshal Griff Bonnell and his brothers seek to restore law and order, they meet with harsh resistance, that is until Jessica falls in love with Bonnell.  But when the man's brother is murdered and the two families become bitter enemies, Jessica's loyalty is divided, and Bonnell faces his biggest moral dilemma : how to avenge his brother's death and still maintain his vow of non-violence.--Container.  HU DVD 6544

Jeffords butts heads with his daughter, Vance, a firebrand with serious daddy issues, over her dowry, choice of husband, and finally, ownership of the land itself.  HU DVD 6105

Giù la testa = Duck you sucker. The Sergio Leone anthology. 2007. 2 videodiscs (157 min.). "Juan Miranda (Rod Steiger) is a cigar-chomping, salt-of-the-earth peasant with a Robin Hood heart.  John Mallory (James Coburn) is a dynamite-tossing Irish revolutionary who has fled to Mexico to practice his skills.  Together, they're a devilishly volatile mix of anti-establishment philosophies and violent tendencies as they attempt to liberate political prisoners, defend their compatriots against a well-equipped militia and risk their lives on a train filled with explosives" -- Container.  HU DVD 5333

The great train robbery and other primary works. Movies begin : a treasury of early cinema, 1894-1914. 2002. 1 videodisc (75 min.). The genesis of the motion picture medium is recreated in this collection of films from cinema's formative period. More than crucial historical artifacts, these films reveal the foundation from which the styles and stories of the contemporary cinema would later arise.  DVD 6116

Heaven's gate. 2000. 1 videodisc (219 min.). A lawman and a hitman are in love with the same woman. All three are caught up in a devastating class war, when ruthless ranchers decide to kill off the starving immigrants who have been stealing their cattle. The story is based on a real range war in the 1890s in Johnson County, Wyoming.  HU DVD 4307

Hell's hinges. 1985. 1 videocassette (65 min.). When young minister Robert Henley (Standing) arrives in Hell's Hinges, Blaze Tracey, the notorious outlaw, is transformed into goodness-- not by religion, but by the sight of the minister's sister, Faith.  DVD 5431

High noon. Silver Screen classics. 1998. 1 videodisc (ca. 85 min.). A retired marshal's wedding is interrupted when he learns a killer he had sent to jail will return to town on the noon train to seek revenge. The townspeople refuse to help him, so he is forced to take up his badge and guns again, alienating his new bride, a Quaker who is opposed to violence.  HU DVD 4

High plains drifter. 1998. 1 videodisc (106 min.). A stranger is hired to protect a guilt-ridden Western town from three desperadoes.   HU DVD 2938

Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo. The John Wayne collection: John Wayne collection. 2007. 2 videodiscs (141 min.). In the small Texas town of Rio Bravo, law and order is maintained by three unlikely enforcers: hard-boiled sheriff Chance; former quick draw artist Dude, now gone drunk and disheveled; and the crippled, wisecracking Stumpy, who patrols the jail with a shotgun.  The arrest and incarceration of Joe Burdette for murder has set these three at odds with his brother, corrupt and wealthy landowner Nathan Burdette.  Nathan assembles a force of hired guns to spring Joe, while Chance enlists hotshot gunslinger Colorado.  Complications arise in the form of Feathers -- not the usual saloon floozy but a competent professional gambler accustomed to sparring with men -- who has an eye for Chance.   HU DVD 7326

Hud. 1991. 1 videocassette (112 min.). Film look at the conflicts of a Texas ranch family in which a cynical uncle and a venerable grandfather vie for the respect and admiration of a naive seventeen-year-old boy. DVD 8492

I shot Jesse James. First films of Samuel Fuller: Eclipse: Eclipse (Criterion Collection (Firm)). 2007. 1 videodisc (81 min.). After years of crime reporting and writing pulp novels and screenplays, Samuel Fuller made his directorial debut with the lonesome ballad of Robert Ford who fatally betrayed his friend, the notorious Jesse James.  HU DVD 3455

The iron horse International version. The Ford at Fox collection. 2007. 1 videodisc (134 min.). A young man pursues his murdered father's dream of the first transcontinental railroad, overcoming impossible odds, greedy officials, crooked Indians, and his father's killer to unite the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific railways.  HU DVD 3473

The iron horse U.S. version. The Ford at Fox collection. 2007. 1 videodisc (149 min.). A young man pursues his murdered father's dream of the first transcontinental railroad, overcoming impossible odds, greedy officials, crooked Indians, and his father's killer to unite the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific railways.  HU DVD 3472

John Ford's my darling Clementine; Frontier marshal. The Ford at Fox collection. 2006. 2 videodiscs (168 min.). My darling Clementine: After Wyatt Earp's brother James is murdered by cattle rustlers, the frontier legend becomes Tombstone's marshal and sets out to avenge the younger man's death. Torn between his badge and his fury, Earp confronts the likely killers, the notoriously lawless family of Old Man Clanton, setting the stage for the famed shootout at the O.K. Corral. Along the way, Earp falls in love with schoolteacher Clementine. -- Frontier marshal: Earp agrees to become marshal and establish order in Tombstone in this very romanticized version of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.  DVD 3489

Johnny Guitar. 1995. 1 videocassette (116 min.). When the railroad finally comes to a frontier boomtown, two power-hungry women fight to control the town and everyone in it. An enterprising business woman (Crawford) not only controls the nearby profitable gambling, she's also been buying up enough property to make her the most powerful person in town.  Her arch rival (McCambridge) sets out to stop her and force her out of town. The arrival of Johnny Guitar (Hayden) delays, but cannot prevent, a violent showdown between the women.  DVD 8768

The last picture show. 1999. 1 videodisc (126 min.). Story of the social and sexual mores in small, dreary Texas town -- where everyone knows everyone else's business, and there is an oppressive sense of doom that hangs over the town.  When Sam the Lion (Ben Johnson), who represents all that was good about the land dies, the last of the West and the American dream it represents passes.  HU DVD 1118

Little Big Man. 2003. 1 videodisc (149 min.). Jack Crabb is 121 years old. And he's done it all. He's been a full-fledged Cheyenne, an Indian fighter, a snake oil merchant, master gunman, drinking buddy of wild Bill Hickok, colleague of Buffalo Bill, and is the only survivor of Custer's Last Stand. Crabb is either the Old West's most neglected hero or the biggest liar ever to cross the Mississippi. Little Big Man is Jack Crabb's story.  HU DVD 650

Lonely are the brave. 1985. 1 videocassette (107 min.). An off-beat contemporary Western starring Kirk Douglas as the last cowboy of the jet age who tries to spring his friend from jail and ends up on the run alone. The sheriff, however, must bring him to justice despite his own sympathy for the renegade.  DVD 12168

Mad Dog Morgan. Tromasterpiece collection. 2009. 2 videodiscs (98 min.). A dramatization of the story of Dan Morgan, an adventurer whose exploits during the Australian gold rush caused him to become a wanted outlaw and the object of a manhunt.  HU DVD 3462

Man of the west. 2008. 1 videodisc (99 min.). When the train he is on gets robbed, Link Jones finds himself unwillingly reunited with his old gang. Dock Tobin, the gang's sadistic, half-crazed patriarch, was like a father to Link some twenty years past and welcomes him back. To survive, Link must take up his old ways--his killing ways.  HU DVD 4584

The man who shot Liberty Valance. 2001. 1 videodisc (123 min.). The story of a man who becomes a legend and an important political figure by falsely claiming he shot a ruthless gunman (Liberty Valance).  HU DVD 1809

The mark of Zorro. 20th Century Fox studio classics: Studio classic. 2003. 1 videodisc (93 min.). Disguised as Zorro, a sword-wielding mystery man dressed in black, Don Diego Vega works to restore his father, the deposed Alcalde, back to power and return tax money stolen by the villanous tyrant--while finding time to romance the tyrant's beautiful niece.  HU DVD 2345

McCabe & Mrs. Miller. 2002. 1 videodisc (121 min.). Charismatic but dumb John McCabe arrives in a turn-of-the-century Pacific Northwest town to set up a whorehouse/tavern. Shrewd Mrs. Miller, a professional madam, arrives soon after construction begins.  She offers to help McCabe run his business and the whorehouse thrives.  McCabe and Mrs. Miller draw closer, despite their conflicting intelligences and philosophies.  Soon, however, the mining deposits in the town attract the attention of a major corporation, which wants to buy out McCabe along with the rest.  His decision has major repercussions for him, Mrs. Miller, and the town.  HU DVD 358

The naked spur. 1991. 1 videocassette (93 min.). Having lost both his ranch and his unfaithful fiancee, Howard King is determined to track down a vicious criminal in an attempt to start a new life with the bounty money he'll collect. When he finally catches up with his prey - and with the outlaw's female companion - he faces an even more perilous trip back with his prisoner.  HU DVD 7570

Once upon a time in the West. Widescreen DVD collection. 2003. 2 videodiscs (165 min.). A mysterious loner, a falsely accused renegade, a young widow, a railroad magnate and his vicious hired gun cross paths in a tale of land grabbing, greed and murder in the old West.  HU DVD 2368

One-eyed jacks. 1998. 1 videocassette (141 min.). Johnny Rio, betrayed by his best friend, returns to seek vengeance after serving five years in a Mexican prison. DVD 10236

The outlaw Josey Wales.  Clint Eastwood collection. 2001. 1 videodisc (135 min.). After avenging his family's brutal murder by Union Forces in the Civil War, Missouri farmer Josey Wales is on the lam, pursued by a pack of killers. He travels westward alone, but a ragtag group of outcasts is drawn to him, and Wales can't leave his motley surrogate family unprotected.  HU DVD 1187

Pale rider. Clint Eastwood collection. 2000. 1 videodisc (116 min.). Corporate mining boss Coy LaHood offers the independent pan miners a deal: get out or be carried out. The terrorized miners have little choice but to accept until a nameless stranger rides into their camp. The miners call him "Preacher." But to LaHood, he's an avenging pale rider and hell follows with him.  HU DVD 1189

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. 1989. 1 videocassette (122 min.). Violent and bloody portrayal of the confrontation of two former friends, now on opposite sides of the law.  HU DVD 3813

The phantom empire. 2002. 2 videodiscs (244 min.). Autry battles the "Thunder Riders", ray guns and robots of the underground city of Murania.  HU DVD 2162

Posse. 2001. 1 videodisc (111 min.). Western about a mostly black posse who do battle with a pompous, racist colonel, and a vicious white sheriff who wants to take over a peaceful black frontier settlement.  HU DVD 7225

Pursued. 2003. 1 videodisc (105 min.). A complex tale of family feuds, murder and vengeance in the Old West.  HU DVD 1373

Rancho Notorious. Archive collection: Archive collection. 2009. 1 videodisc (89 min.). A western, set in the 1870s, which dramatizes the ballad The legend of Chuck-A-Luck. The search of a Wyoming cowboy for his fiancée's murderer leads him to a ranch-hideaway for bandits which is operated by an ex-saloon entertainer.  HU DVD 7481

Red River. 1998. 1 videodisc (ca. 133 min.). With no market for his herd, the master of a vast cattle ranch and his son decide to head the first cattle drive over the now famous Chisholm Trail, past the Red River, into Missouri. The path is filled with hardship and the drive looks hopeless as the men struggle to prevail.  HU DVD 1718

Ride the high country. 2006. 1 videodisc (94 min.). Two old friends have taken drastically different paths growing up. One is a small town sheriff, the other has become a burglar, bent on stealing the gold the other is shipping cross-country.  HU DVD 7482

Rio Grande. 2002. 1 videodisc (105 min.). A Cavalry unit on the Mexican border in the 1880s conducts a campaign against marauding Indians.  HU DVD 1215

Samuel Fuller's The Baron of Arizona. First films of Samuel Fuller: Eclipse: Eclipse (Criterion Collection (Firm)). 2007. 1 videodisc (97 min.). In one of his own favorite roles, Vincent Price portrays legendary swindler James Addison Reavis, who, in 1880, concocted an elaborate and dangerous hoax to ascend to the title of "Baron of Arizona" and inherit all the land in the state.  HU DVD 3456

The searchers. 2006. 1 videodisc (119 min.). A Civil War veteran spends five years on the trail of a Comanche raiding party that kidnapped his dead brother's daughters. Breathtaking scenery gives a picture of frontier families separated by miles of emptiness.  HU DVD 1808
