Social media platforms

Differences between platforms

While users may transition seamlessly from one platform to another, the restrictions around using each platform for research vary. You may need specialized tools, methods, or permission to work on any given platform.

This guide covers 6 different popular platforms, most owned by different companies. Each subpage on a specific platform will include a brief description of the platform, how its TOS impacts research, and a list of tools used for working with that platform. The tools listed will be free, usually open source, and listed by ease of use, descending from easier to harder. These lists are not exhaustive, but aim to provide good options for entry-level researchers in the field when possible, and any sort of option (even if advanced) when not.
