Intro to Digital Research for Students

This guide is for AU students and anyone interested in digital scholarship and humanities. This guides offers definitions, AU library tools on creating projects, along with other various programs and tools to gain skills in digital scholarship.

Free Software Use

AU offers a variety of software that you can use for creating and editing your digital project. All of the following programs are available as part of the Anderson Computing Complex, located in Mac Lab on the the basement level of Anderson Hall. 

The following software is available to use on a walk-in basis. It is important to note that there is no staff around to instruct or guide you on how to use the software so some degree of prior knowledge or ability to self-teach might be needed. 

  • Adobe Creative Cloud Suite 2023 (including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, Acrobat Pro, etc.)
  • Audacity v3.0.3
  • Garage Band v10.4.7
  • Handbrake v1.3
  • iMovie v10.3
  • Maxon Cinema 4D v2023.1
  • Motion v5.6.3
  • Microsoft Office Suite

Technology Equipment at the Library

The Library offers several different pieces of equipment that can be checked out either on a walk up or appointment basis. The following are some but not all devices available:

  • Cameras
  • Phone Light Ring
  • Adapters

Simple Studio

The AU Library also has a Simple Studio that you can reserve and use to create video or audio projects. The Simple Studio is located on the lower level of the library, and contains a camera, microphone, teleprompter, backdrops, and a learning glass. The space is great for recording video or audio interviews, oral histories, or podcasts.

The Simple Studio is first-come, first-served, but must be reserved in order to use. It can be reserved Monday - Friday in 3 hour chunks. The morning slot is from 10am-1pm, and the afternoon slot is from 2-5pm. Once you make a reservation, one of our video support staff will be able to help you get set up and record your multimedia project.
