De Nederlandse Opera presenets Les Vêpres siciliennes opera in five acts. 2011, 1 online resource (208 min.).  Les vepres siciliennes, like the similarly epic Don Carlos, was conceived as a grand opera for Paris and is driven by the tensions between private passions and public politics. Degas' Dancers. 1 online resource (streaming video file).  In this film, as in other key titles in the Roland Collection, a meeting takes place between several media: the dance of Degas' subject matter, the dynamism of his draftsmanship, the drama of the score by Marius Constant, and the exploratory and expressive direction of the film-maker's camera work. The elements are mutually illuminating. Degas anticipates photographic and filmic qualities in his use of light and the 'verism' of his cropping and composition. The dancers 'draw' and compose in space, transposing music into visual form, which is in turn reinterpreted in the score, synchronized with Anthony Roland's moving, extemporizing camera work. This film, like others in the collection, collaborates with its subject in a way that complements and perhaps challenges more cerebral, analytical films in this and other sections. Where a more conventional narrator might hasten to make a didactic point about Degas - for example, about the frequent misery of girls forced into the 'marriage market' of ballet training - this film, with no narration, respects the silence and inscrutability of the artist's images. It permits us a slower, more meditative entry into the pictures, during which we may indeed come to sense tensions, ambivalences, even pain, existing side by side with delicacy and beauty. The flamboyant leaps, dizzying pirouettes and crisp pointe work that are standard features of the production give the performers every opportunity to show off their technical prowess. But at the same time, the comic story based on Cervantes' masterpiece makes strong demands on the dancers' acting abilities. The leading Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky drew inspiration for his production from the libretto of the first version of Don Quichot by Marius Petipa, created in 1869. The former artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet and Artist in Residence of the American Ballet Theatre has also added his own elements and choreography to the ballet. Flamenco at 5:15. 1 online resource (1 video file (29 min.)).  This Oscar-winning film is a visual and emotional thriller. It is an impressionistic record of a flamenco dance class given to senior students of the National Ballet School of Canada by two great teachers from Spain, Susana Robledo and her longtime accompanist husband, Antonio Robledo. These dedicated teachers come to school every winter to conduct classes held after the day's regular schedule has ended. As trained dancers, the students pick up most of the steps easily, but Susana notices that many are apprehensive and scared since flamenco dance requires them to evoke different emotions entirely. This classic documentary film shows the beautiful young North American dancers - inspired by the flamenco rhythms and mesmerized by Susana's extraordinary energy - joyously merging with an ancient Gypsy culture.

Gil Roman y el Béjart Ballet Lausanne el esfuerzo y el animo. 1 online resource (79 min.).  Filmakers library online. "The choreographer Maurice Bejart was one of the most brilliant artists of the 20th century. He revolutionized the art of dance and excited thousands of spectators throughout the world, many of them indifferent to ballet until then. In order to continue and preserve his work and ballets, Bejart named the French dancer Gil Roman, a member of his company since 1979, as his successor. Roman is well aware of the dauntingly large shoes he's expected to fill. In this film, we see how Roman's own choreography, as well as leadership, must prove worthy to secure the future of a beloved institution hitherto unimaginable without its founder's active guidance. Daringly, Roman chooses to prove his mettle by staging BBL's first-ever program without any Bejart works. We glimpse rehearsals, and dancers past and present are interviewed. Excerpts of the new dances, look exciting, as does the climactic gala. Bejart himself is heard on archival tape and seen in stills, but the focus here is on the present magnificent company"--Original container. Streaming video.;1754087
