The End of EndNote Desktop

AU Library will be canceling our subscription to EndNote Desktop in May 2021. This guide will help EndNote users determine how best to move forward and will include details on maintaining access to the current version of EndNote, as well as how to chose w

Syncing with EndNote Basic

If you want to use the free version of EndNote as your primary citation management system, it is easy to sync your EndNote Desktop and Basic libraries so that your Basic library is fully populated with your references as you transition away from EndNote Desktop.

To start, register for EndNote Basic through the Web of Science database when you are either on-campus or using our VPN. Doing so will ensure that you have access to the version of EndNote Basic with the most features. You can find the link to Web of Science AU Library's Search Databases list. Select the link to EndNote along the top level navigation bar:

Sign in and/or register with your american.edu email address then open EndNote Desktop. With your EndNote Desktop library open, select Sync.

Once syncing has finished, you will find all of the references you had previously saved in EndNote Desktop available in your EndNote Basic library. Going forward, be sure to add references to your EndNote Basic library.

Capture Web References

You can use EndNote Basic to grab web references and add them to your library. To set this up, you will need to install Capture Reference Plug-In. To do so, select Downloads to the right of the top navigation bar:

In Chrome and Firefox, drag the "Capture Reference" button to the browser's bookmark toolbar. If you're using Internet Explorer, select "Download Windows with Internet Explorer plug-in."

Cite While You Write Plug-In

If you already have the Cite While You Write plug-in from having used it with EndNote Desktop, you do not need to download it again, but you will need to change your preferences so that Cite While You Write is collecting  references from EndNote Online and not EndNote Desktop.

To do this, navigate to EndNote in the toolbar and select Preferences. Next, click on Application in the upper level toolbar in the pop-up window and then choose "EndNote Online" from the dropdown menu:

If you have not already downloaded the plug-in and would like to utilize this functionality, select the “Download Windows with Internet Explorer Plug-in”.
