When looking for a book outside of AU, we recommend using our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. AU is a member of a local consortium of schools, but the normal process for requesting these books has been disrupted by the pandemic. As things progress through the Fall semester, we hope that our Consortium Loan Service will become more available, but until that point, you can always requests books outside of AU using ILL.
Please start on the AU Library's home page at https://www.american.edu/library/
Choose where you want to search in the dropdown menu and then type in the title of the book you are looking for.
If you are not signed into your My Library Account, you will see this yellow banner across the top of your search results. You must be logged in to request books. Just use your AU portal credentials as normal.
Once successfully signed in, you will see a "request item via Interlibrary Loan" link since this title is checked out from AU.
You will be redirected to another page where an ILL form will auto-populate with the information of the book you are looking to request.
Please be aware, there may be significant delays in receiving your items through ILL as libraries across the country are affected by the pandemic.
Once your item arrives, you will receive an email notification. Instead of picking the item up from the Circulation Desk, there is now a link inside this email for you to schedule your curbside pickup time.
Note: pickup appointments start 48 hours after you click the link in your email. We are not currently able to offer same day pickups, so please plan your appointment time carefully.
Clicking that link will take you to a new window where you can choose a 30 minute interval that works for you to come to campus and pickup your books.
Note: Clicking "Submit Times" on the bottom DOES NOT confirm your pickup time.
Click continue and then fill out the booking form with your name, email, AU ID number, and if you are picking the books up for yourself or someone else.
Note: If you are picking up for someone else, you must have a proxy agreement established with them. If you do not, library staff will not be able to check these items out and they will not be ready for pickup. You can find the Proxy Agreement here. Please email the filled out form to email@example.com. Once this is established, you will be prompted to enter their information in the booking form.
Remember, ILL items cannot be transferred between accounts. If you requested a book for someone else under your own name, the book will be checked out to your account and not to theirs.
After you click submit, your curbside pickup has been confirmed! You will also receive an email confirmation and a reminder on the day of your pickup.
We will package all items that you have waiting for you for your scheduled pickup. If you have several outstanding requests, we recommend waiting until more of your books have arrived before setting up your curbside pickup for your convenience.
And that's it! We will have your materials checked out, packaged, and waiting on the table inside the vestibule for your scheduled pickup time.
