A film trilogy. The Criterion collection: Criterion collection (DVD videodiscs). 2003. 4 videodiscs (410 min.). This four disc set features Swedish director Ingmar Bergman's work on three of his most powerful films presented as a trilogy. The films of the trilogy examine the necessity of religion and question the promise of faith. The last disc is a documentary film offering views on set construction, lighting, rehearsals, editing, as well as intimate conversations with Ingmar Bergman and members of his cast and crew. Äideistä parhain = Mother of mine. Film movement series. 2007. 1 videodisc (105 min.). Uncle: Biography of a humble man, retold by an anonymous nephew, who strings together a collection of his uncle's passions, failings and beliefs. When nine-year-old Eero's father is killed at the beginning of World War II his mother, broken by grief, is unable to care for him. She sends Eero out of Finland to live with a family in Sweden, away from the conflict. Feeling abandoned by his biological Finnish mother, he cannot quite attach to his Swedish surrogate mother. Early Bergman: Torment, Crisis, Port of call, Thirst, To Joy. Eclipse. Series 1, Early Bergman: Eclipse (Criterion Collection (Firm)). 2007. 5 videodiscs (474 min.). Crisis: Urban beauty-shop proprietress Mrs. Jenny arrives in an idyllic rural town one morning to whisk away her 18-year-old daughter, Nelly, whom she abandoned as a child, from the loving woman who raised her. Once in Stockholm, Nelly soon receives a crash course in adult corruption and wrenching heartbreak. Port of call: Berit, a suicidal young woman living in a working-class port town, unexpectedly falls for Gösta, a sailor on leave. Haunted by a troubled past and held in a vice grip by her domineering mother, Berit begins to hope that her relationship with Gösta might save her from self-destruction. Thirst: A couple traveling across war-ravaged Europe. A disintegrating marriage. A ballet dancer's scarred past. Elliptically told in flashbacks and multiple narrative threads, this film shows people enslaved to memory and united in isolation. To joy: An orchestra violinist's dreams of becoming a celebrated soloist and fears of his own mediocrity get in the way of his marriage to the patient, caring Marta. Played out to the music of Beethoven, this film is a heartbreaking tale of one man's inability to overcome the demons standing in the way of his happiness. Torment: A dark coming-of-age drama about a boarding-school senior, Widgren, terrorized by his sadistic Latin teacher. Fanny och Alexander = Fanny & Alexander. The Criterion collection: Criterion collection (DVD videodiscs). 2004. 5 videodiscs (618 min.). Told through the eyes of Alexander and his sister Fanny, we see the exuberant and colorful Ekdahl household in a Swedish town early in the twentieth century. Their parents, Oscar and Emilie, are the director and the leading lady of the local theatre company. Oscar's mother and brother are its chief patrons. After Oscar's early death, his widow marries the bishop and moves with her children to his austere and forbidding chancery. Flickan = The girl. 2010. 1 videodisc (95 min.). In the summer of 1981, a 9-year-old girl is left behind in her aunt's care while the rest of her family goes to Africa as aid workers. The aunt is soon courted by a man and leaves the girl with the promise to return in a few days. The abandoned girl keeps this a secret from everyone and uses her freedom to discover the world around her as the summer passes by. Saraband. 2006. 1 videodisc (112 min.). Saraband is a revisitation to 1973's Scenes From a Marriage, as thirty-odd years have passed in the lives of former husband and wife Johan and Marianne. An inner prompting has sent Marianne to visit Johan in his ramshackle but finely appointed house in the middle of the forest, where she becomes a sounding board for the emotional wreckage she encounters there: Henrik (Johan's 61-year-old son) and Henrik's 19-year-old daughter, Karin. Henrik and Karin are musicians, both locked in grief over the death of wife and mother Anna two years earlier. Infused with the unsentimental, gentle humor of distanced perspective and thoughtful reflection, this is another of Bergman's provocative expositions into the most fundamental human need: connection.
