La Rafle. 2010. 2 videodiscs (120 min.). 1942. Joseph is eleven. And this June morning, he must go to school, a yellow star sown on his chest. He receives the support of a goods dealer. The mockery of a baker. Between kindness and contempt, Jo, his Jewish friends, their families, learn of life in an occupied Paris, on the Butte Montmartre, where they've taken shelter. At least that's what they think, until that morning on July 16th 1942, when their fragile happiness is toppled over. From the Vélodrome D'Hiver, where 13 000 Jews are crammed, to the camp of Beaune-La-Rolande, from Vichy to the terrace of the Berghof, La Rafle follows the real destinies of the victims and the executioners. Red lights = Feux rouges. 2005. 1 videodisc (106 min.). Antoine and Helene drive to South France to return their kids from a holiday camp. The traffic is dense and the atmosphere increasingly tense. La régle du jeu = Rules of the game. 2003. Criterion collection: Criterion collection . 2 videodiscs (106 min.). Cloaked in a comedy of manners, this scathing critique of corrupt French society is about a weekend hunting party at which amorous escapades abound among the aristocratic guests, which are also mirrored by the activities of the servants downstairs. Renaissance Paris 2054. 2007. 1 videodisc (105 min.). In this animated drama set in Paris in 2054, all movement is monitored and recorded. Casting a shadow over everything is the city's largest company, Avalon, which insinuates itself into every aspect of contemporary life to sell its primary export -- youth and beauty. Ressources humaines = Human resources. 2008. KimStim collection. 1 videodisc (103 min.). Frank's dad, a laborer, saved his whole life to give Frank a good education. Now back home with a college degree and a management job at his dad's company, Frank is torn between his old life and new responsibilities. Thinking he understands both sides, he gets in the middle of a union dispute that risks his reputation and his father's future. HOME USE COLLECTION DVD 7938
Le retour de Martin Guerre = The return of Martin Guerre. 97. 1 videodisc (123 min.). Set in 16th century France, the action is based on an actual case that took place in a small peasant village. Martin Guerre, a young husband, marches off to the Hundred Years' War and disappears. His wife believes she is a widow. Nine years later he returns to resume his marriage and life. He is denounced as an impostor (this Martin Guerre is a much nicer person than the man who went to war) and a trial is demanded. Not until the very last minutes of a tension-filled courtroom sequence is the situation resolved. DVD 68
Rêves de poussière = Dreams of dust. 2007. Film movement series #v year 5, film 9. 1 videodisc (86 min.). A Nigerien peasant comes looking for work in Essakane, a dusty gold mine in NE Burkina Faso, Africa. He quickly finds out the gold rush ended twenty years before and the inhabitants of this wasteland manage to exist simply from force of habit. HOME USE COLLECTION DVD 3059
Rois et reine = Kings & queen. 2005. 1 videodisc (150 min.). Parallel storylines tell the current state of affairs for two ex-lovers: Nora's a single mother who comes to care for her terminally ill father; holed in up in mental ward, Ismael, a brilliant musician, plots his escape. Le roman d'un tricheur = The story of a cheat. 2010. Eclipse series 22, Presenting Sacha Guitry. 1 videodisc (81 min.). A gambler and petty thief recounts his life and exploits. Romance. 99. 1 videodisc (98 min.). Claiming he loves her, but that he has lost his desire for her, Marie's boyfriend, Paul, refuses to engage in sexual relations, catapulting Marie into a desperate search for intimacy and erotic connection. HOME USE COLLECTION DVD 3833
Les roseaux sauvages = Wild reeds. 2008. Andre Techine : 4 film collector's edition: Andre Techine : 4 film collector's edition. 1 videodisc (114 min.). A poignant coming-of-age story set in southwest France in 1962. Sensitive young Franðcois is uncertain of his sexuality as he finds himself more attracted to his classmate Serge than to his platonic girlfriend Maèitâe. An older boy, Henri, is drawn into the circle, further complicating relationships. Rue Cases-Nègres = Sugar Cane Alley. 2004. 1 videodisc (107 min.). The teenage life and adventures of young José, who lives in a shanty-town on Martinique in the mid-1930s, comprises the body of this film. José lives with his grandmother and is well aware of the French colonial presence. He gets into mischief, learns valuable lessons on living from an old former slave, drinks too much one time, and even sets fire to one of the run-down shanties. Le sainte victoire = Bitter victory. 2009. 1 videodisc (105 min.). Xavier Alvarez is an architect in Aix-en-Provence who, due to a corrupt mayor, fails to win the recognition and social standing that he aspires to. To advance his career, he lends his support to an outsider mayoral candidate, Vincent Cluzel. Once Cluzel is elected things do not go as planned for Alvarez. HOME USE COLLECTION DVD 7526

Sango Malo the village teacher. 94. 1 videodisc (94 min.). A young teacher, Sango Malo, comes to a rural village with ideas of promoting rural development through practical education. He clashes with the established headmaster, who insists on a traditional French-style education. Malo alienates many of his supporters through his impatience and is arrested by the army on the behalf of the village chief, storeowner and priest. Seul contre tous = I stand alone. 2001. 1 videodisc (93 min.). Psychological drama about the futility and hopelessness faced by a French butcher who was the central character in Noé's 1991 film Carne. After being released from prison he leaves his mute daughter in a Paris institution and moves to Lille with his new mistress. The second part in a trilogy of films (Trois couleurs = Three colors) by director Krzysztof Kieslowski, White presents the mysterious tale of a man whose life disintegrates when his beautiful wife of six months deserts him. In a Paris prison cell, five inmates use every ounce of their tenacity and ingenuity in an elaborate attempt to tunnel to freedom. Four of the inmates have been together for awhile in their cell, when Gaspard, the fifth inmate, is added to the cell. The original four inmates must decide if they want to take him into their confidence or not and whether to continue tunneling or not. DVD 350
Twentynine palms. 2004. 1 videodisc (114 min.). David is an American looking for locations for a photo shoot. Katia, his girlfriend, is French and speaks very little English. The couple travel through the California desert, all the while arguing and making love. The trip includes a stop for Chinese food, a brief encounter with a belligerent motorist, an argument over ice cream, a run-in with a three-legged dog. After having a huge argument in the middle of the night, the two reconcile, but a traumatic incident occurs on the road that pushes them to their breaking point. HOME USE COLLECTION DVD 3828

Un condamné à mort s'est échappé, ou, Le vent souffle où il vent = A man escaped. 2004. 1 videodisc (ca. 100 min.). A French Resistance fighter is sent to an infamous prison in Lyon in 1943, where 7,000 of the 12,000 prisoners housed there died either by natural means or by execution. Lt. Fontaine is certain that execution awaits him, and begins planning his escape. For a period of time he goes it alone, but reluctantly takes on a partner. He gets some help from a couple of prisoners allowed to stroll in the exercise yard, but for the most part he is a figure of isolation. DVD 1120

In the years just prior to WWI, Monsieur Ladmiral, an aging impressionist painter, spends his usual Sunday afternoon visit with his family ruminating over life's small pleasures and inevitable disappointments until his daughter Irene arrives. Irene, a whirlwind of activity for whom life itself is an art, has a magical reviving effect on her father and the world suddenly takes on the beautiful hues and feelings of an Impressionist masterpiece. She also grows close to Pierre, a free-spirited teenager who cares little about God. Anna is preparing for her confirmation, but her budding desire for Pierre shakes her faith. He had skimmed $200,000 and a cache of cocaine from his former partner, a corrupt cop, who is trying to get the money back. At the same time, the dealer's father wants to be reunited with his son. To survive Nazi-occupied 1940's France, Marie turns to illegally aborting pregnancies for a hefty fee. As her income increases, Marie moves her family to a posh apartment. Completely seduced by her lifestyle, Marie ignores her shell-shocked husband Paul. Things take a disastrous turn after one of Marie's "customers" dies and her husband turns her over to the authorities. Inspired by the real-life of Marie-Louise Girard, who was executed in 1943 by the Vichy Government, who'd declared abortion as a Crime Against the State because it diminished the number of potential soldiers. Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot = M. Hulot's holiday. 2001. Criterion collection: Classic collection: Criterion collection (DVD videodiscs): Classic collection (Chicago, Ill.). 1 videodisc (87 min.). La Veuve de Saint-Pierre = The widow of Saint-Pierre. 2000. 1 videodisc (108 min.). Based on a true story about revenge, fear and redemption. In 19th century St. Pierre, a convict sentenced to death strives to better himself in the eyes of the police chief's beautiful wife and that of the town that she has him working in. Since there is no guillotine or executioner, one of each has to be sent for from France. HOME USE COLLECTION DVD 269
La vie de Jésus = Life of Jesus. 97. 1 videodisc (96 min.). Twenty-year-old Freddy and his friends are chronically unemployed with little schooling and spend their time racing their motorbikes around town and through the northern French countryside. They are bored and filled with resentment, which they often take out on local Arab immigrants. When Kader, an Arab teenager, pursues Freddy's girlfriend Marie, Freddy and his friends set out to punish him. HOME USE COLLECTION DVD 3827
La vie est belle = Life is rosy. 2000. Library of African cinema: Library of African cinema (Videodisc). 1 video file (85 min.). La Vie est belle tells the rags to riches story of Kourou, a poor rural musician who realizes that to succeed in today's music world he must go to the city and break into radio and television. In Kinshasa he uses his wit and talent to win a beautiful wife, trick his greedy boss and succeed in singing his "theme song" on national television. Although the film is primarily entertainment, it reveals much about class divisions, male-female relations, the desires of the urban poor, and the economic and social problems confronting rural immigrants to the cities of Zaire. Zan boko means "the place where the placenta is buried" and symbolizes the continuity between past and present in African village societies. Demongeot is an 11-year-old nuisance who must spend a few days with her uncle Noriet in Paris after her mother goes off with a new lover. She wants nothing more than to ride the subway but a strike by the Paris Metro workers prevents this. Film uses sight-gags, film parodies and stunts to show the effect on Paris on her antics involving an odd assortment of local and visiting characters. DVD 5244
