Flamenco at 5:15. 1 online resource (1 video file (29 min.)). This Oscar-winning film is a visual and emotional thriller. These dedicated teachers come to school every winter to conduct classes held after the day's regular schedule has ended. As trained dancers, the students pick up most of the steps easily, but Susana notices that many are apprehensive and scared since flamenco dance requires them to evoke different emotions entirely. "The choreographer Maurice Bejart was one of the most brilliant artists of the 20th century. He revolutionized the art of dance and excited thousands of spectators throughout the world, many of them indifferent to ballet until then. In order to continue and preserve his work and ballets, Bejart named the French dancer Gil Roman, a member of his company since 1979, as his successor. Roman is well aware of the dauntingly large shoes he's expected to fill. In this film, we see how Roman's own choreography, as well as leadership, must prove worthy to secure the future of a beloved institution hitherto unimaginable without its founder's active guidance. Daringly, Roman chooses to prove his mettle by staging BBL's first-ever program without any Bejart works. We glimpse rehearsals, and dancers past and present are interviewed. Excerpts of the new dances, look exciting, as does the climactic gala. Bejart himself is heard on archival tape and seen in stills, but the focus here is on the present magnificent company"--Original container. Streaming video.
