Researching the Down Ballot

This page is to help you research the ballot below the Presidential races

Down Ballot General Research Resources

1.  Vote 411:  https://www.vote411.org/

This site is from the League of Women Voters and is a purely non-partisan site.  Use it to:

  • Find out who is on your ballot for all races and any ballot propositions - make notes of your candidates for future research
  • Learn about each candidate
  • Compare answers to standard questions given to each candidate
  • Read analysis of any ballot measure

2.  Open Secrets: https://www.opensecrets.org/

With open secrets you can look up any candidate and see who is funding them.  You can also look up an organization and see who they are funding.  Most of the data is for the federal and state government.  If there are particular groups that are for or against a particular value important to you, you can see who they are funding.

3.  Look for online voter guides:

  • Search for STATE and "voter guide" - for example: Ohio AND "voter guide"
  • For judicial races try: STATE AND "bar association" AND judge to look for judicial ratings
  • For topics try STATE AND "voter guide" AND issue - for example: Pennsylvania AND "voter guide" AND LGBT
  • For school board" CITY/COUNTY AND "school board" AND teacher AND endorsement

3.  Research your local news coverage:  Search by candidate name.  

4.  For incumbents find out more about their records
