Portrait of Jason. 2014, 1 videodisc (108 min.). This portrait of Jason Holliday, a black gay prostitute who dreams of a career as a nightclub performer, is drawn from twelve consecutive hours of filming in a New York City apartment. As he reminisces about his life, Holliday discusses his homosexuality and the gay subcultures in San Francisco and New York. He jokes with the off-screen filmmaker and crew and maintains a sense of humor even as he recalls hustling, heroin addiction, and jail time. Holliday also performs for the camera, impersonating female entertainers and movie personalities such as Mae West, Butterfly McQueen, and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the wind. Prejudice: More than black and white. 1 streaming video file (35 min.). Muslims, blacks, gays, people with disabilities, and immigrants of every ethnicity and color: they and many other groups have stood in the spotlight glare of intolerance, easy targets for every sort of discrimination and violence. What makes people prone to irrational hate, and what steps can individuals and society take to eradicate it? In this program, psychology professors Susan Fiske, of Princeton University, and Mahzarin Banaji, of Harvard University; representatives of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and other pro-tolerance groups; and victims of prejudice share their insights and experiences. Queens and Cowboys: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo chronicles a complete season of the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA). Roping and riding across North America, the IGRA's courageous cowboys and cowgirls must face many challenges both in and out of the arena on their quest to qualify for the World Finals at the end of the season. Along the way, they'll bust every stereotype in the book. This award-winning film tells the story of five members of the International Gay Rodeo Association. Queer China, Comrade China = zhi tong zhi. 1 streaming media file (118 min.). We are in an age where images possess power to affect the world. We intend to review and summarize the development of homosexuality as an issue in the past 30 years with an archive of images. We aim to trace and document the homosexual equal rights movement in China and highlight the historical moments such as the decriminalization and depathologizing of homosexuality, along with a visual report of Chinese people's conception shifts and positive media exposures. Our film will also present the achievements in legislation, academic research, literary creation in publication, artistic works on display and the joint efforts of combating HIV/AIDS by sexologists, medical professionals and community-based LGBT groups. In this feature length documentary, we interviewed 30 prominent figures in the LGBT community, who have experienced the sea changes of views and lifes lifestyles regarding homosexuality in the past 30 years. Queers in the kingdom: Let your light shine! 1 online resource (75 minutes). Queers in the Kingdom traces the legacy of historical evangelical Christianity through the rise of the secular university and the struggles of the Christian college to remain relevant. This documentary exposes evangelical Christian culture in the U.S. as the underlying force that legalizes Bible-based homophobia. Nowhere is this more evident than in the 200+ well-established Christian Colleges where LGBT students must remain closeted and celibate or risk being expelled and condemned as sinners. Sex in Africa: Perspectives on sex-related concerns in Ethiopia, Mali, and South Africa. 1 streaming video file (49 min.). The Call of Africa: The Voice of a Continent. In Africa, views on sex vary widely from conservative to liberal and from traditional to progressive. Topics covered in this program include gay rights, protected under the law only in post-apartheid South Africa; the practices of female genital excision and "dry sexual intercourse"-each described in detail-as they relate to severe female health issues and the violation of a woman's right to her own body; the practice of "dry sex" as it relates to the spread of HIV; and female prostitution as a means of subsistence-and, if a prostitute is fortunate enough to hook up with a wealthy foreigner, a chance for her and her family to escape poverty. Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch continues his exploration of how Christianity has shaped western attitudes to sex, gender and sexuality through history. Southwest of Salem. 1 videodisc (91 min.). This film follows the story of four young Latina women -- known as the 'San Antonio Four' -- who have been fighting since 1994 to clear their names of false charges and wrongful convictions that they gang-raped two young girls in Texas. Using the women's home video footage from 21 years ago combined with recent verité footage and interviews, the film explores their personal narratives and their search for exculpatory evidence to help their losing criminal trials, documenting their struggle against mythology, homophobia, ritual-abuse hysteria, and prosecutorial fervor in their struggle for exoneration. Stonewall uprising. 2011, 1 videodisc (90 min.). Explores the dramatic event that launched a worldwide rights movement. When police raided a Mafia-run gay bar in Greenwich Village, the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969, gay men and women did something they had not done before: they fought back. Strange frame. 2013, 1 videodisc (95 min.). This animated sci-fi story explores the theme of the transformative power of love between two women. As our story begins it is the 28th century, 200 years after the Great Earth Exodus. We're on Ganymede, one of Jupiter's moons. Our hero Naia is a feisty, young singer-songwriter who falls in love with the beautiful saxophonist Parker. Among those who share their unique stories are a transgender man preparing for his wedding, a New York City cab driver looking to feel comfortable for a big birthday, a young law student struggling through job interviews, and a 12-year-old trans boy whose bravery is only rivaled by his nervousness about looking good for his upcoming Bar Mitzvah. A modern, evolved look at gender through the conduit of clothing, this illuminating documentary elucidates the private and emotional experience that those who struggle with gender identity go through when it comes to fashion. This extended documentary examines the lives of seven Latino GBT men and women, offering profound insights into their relationships with family and loved ones while exploring their sexuality in the contexts of culture, religion, and work. The Dog. 1 videodisc (100 min.). In 1972, John Wojtowicz attempted to rob a Brooklyn bank to pay for his male lover's sex change operation. Three years later Al Pacino portrayed his crime in Dog day afternoon. We gain a historic perspective on New York's gay liberation movement, in which Wojtowicz played an active role. In later footage, he remains a subversive force, backed by the unconditional love of his mother Terry, whose wit and charm infuse the film. The imitation game. 1 videodisc (114 minutes). During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of "gross indecency," an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality - little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. A group of gay activists in Belgrade strikes a tense alliance with Limun, a Serbian crime boss, whose fiancée demands an extravagant wedding that only struggling gay theater director Mirko and his friends can provide. In exchange, macho Limun reluctantly agrees to provide security for the group's Pride parade. It is a tall order: previous attempts to march met with mass violence from right-wing skinheads. When Limun's gang balks at the assignment, he recruits a band of former Balkan war combatants, now dear friends, who will stand up to the aggressors Seven Samurai style, in this rollickingly shrewd and humane comedic take on a vital human rights issue. The Strange History of Don't Ask Don't Tell. 1 online resource (79 min.). Suspenseful, deeply engaging and heart-wrenching, The Strange History of Don't Ask, Don't Tell illustrates the tumultuous evolution of a controversial policy which fostered hate and intolerance within the military - and undermined the very freedoms American soldiers fight for - by forcing gay and lesbian soldiers to lie and live in secrecy. In 1993, President Bill Clinton, trying to deliver on his election promise of lifting the ban on gays in the military, encountered vehement opposition that resulted in the compromise legislation, known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". Tom à la ferme = Tom at the farm. 1 videodisc (103 min.). In this disorientating suspenseful psychological thriller, Tom, a young advertising copywriter, travels to the countryside for the funeral of his boyfriend Guillaume where, he is shocked to learn, no one knows who he is, nor the nature of his relationship with the deceased. When Francis, Guillaume's elder brother, imposes the rules of a twisted game to protect his grieving mother and family honor, Tom now has to play the peacekeeper in a toxic household whose obscure past bodes even greater darkness for his "trip" to the farm. Transcending Gender: Portraits from the Community. 1 streaming video file (43 min.). If the challenges and complexities of a transgendered lifestyle are hard for some people to identify with, first-hand accounts of those experiences may be the best means of creating more understanding. This program features real-world portraits of individuals from the transgendered community-men and women describing for the camera what they've gone through and, in other scenes, going about their daily lives. Namoli Brennet, a singer-songwriter, talks about audience perceptions and overcoming barriers through music, while Daan Erikson, a student, reflects on awkward school experiences, compassion from a grandparent, and upcoming sexual reassignment surgery. Two Dads, Two Moms: Gay Couples and Their Families. 1 streaming video file (52 min.). Profiling families in the U.S., France, and Spain, this program focuses on the children of gay couples and how their experiences resemble or differ from more conventional upbringings. Most of the film's participants are in their late teens or early adulthood and have acquired a broad-minded, philosophical perspective on what they and their parents have gone through - although childhood was hardly challenge-free for any of them. A new era in the Gay Rights Movement was born and 23-year-old film student Vito Russo was among the crowd. Over the next twenty years until his death from AIDS in 1990, Vito would go on to become one of the most outspoken and inspiring activists in the LGBT community's fight for equal rights. He was a pivotal part of three well-known organizations during their formative years: GAA (Gay Activists Alliance); GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation); and ACT UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power). His seminal book "The Celluloid Closet" explored the ways in which gays and lesbians were portrayed on film, what lessons those characters taught gay and straight audiences, and how those negative images were at the root of society's homophobia.
