Several friends created this concept in Copenhagen in 2000 as a way to challenge stereotypes and promote dialogue across differences. The Human Library organization encourages civic engagement to help individuals better understand diversity and to help create more inclusive and cohesive communities across cultural, religious, social, and ethnic differences.
Why American University?
As part of The Civic Life experience, the Human Library helps people engage across differences while searching for common ground. The Human Library, like all libraries, promotes access to information that may allow you to learn more about people in our community. Community building helps promote resilience and builds a shared goal of working together. Learning more about each other allows us to find ways to collaborate to make our campus, city, nation, and world a better place.
