Guidelines for Human books

Useful Hints for Human Books:

  • Use your breaks to exchange your experiences as a “book” with other “books” in the Human Library.
  • It can help to come to the Human Library event prepared with some information, research data, or stories for readers.
  • When you are borrowed, decide with your “reader” on a place that is comfortable for both of you.
  • Check your watch: you have a limited amount of time together. If the “reader” wants to spend more time with you, you can go back to the librarians to extend the loan.
  • Be yourself; be honest, and open to talk and listen carefully.
  • Be ready to share your reflected personal experience. If questions become too intimate, feel free to say that you do not want to answer.
  • Be prepared to repeat yourself again and again, as different “readers” might pose the same question. Try to treat your “reader” as if they are the first person you are giving this information to and not answering the same question for the 4th time.
  • Every “reader” borrowing you will be different, and the reason for choosing your book can vary. A good question to start the discussion with is 'Why did you choose my book?' This will give you a first impression of the reader's interest.
  • Enjoy being a Book! It can be a very interesting and enriching experience for both you and your “readers”!

Sample Questions and Conversation Starters:

  • Why did you choose my book?
  • What interests you in my topic?
  • Do you have any experience in the area of my topic?
  • How might you use this information in your studies/career?
  • How does this affect you?
  • Did this conversation affect your opinion of my topic?
  • Will you continue to look into this topic?
