Guidelines for Readers:
- Show up on time for your scheduled loan time.
- Each loan is for 30 minutes. The “human book” must be returned to the Library at the deadline.
- Loans can be extended or renewed by the librarians, unless the book is reserved for another reader.
- You are not allowed to lend the “human book” to someone else.
- No more than three people can loan a “human book” out at one time.
- Books must be returned in the same condition as they were in at the time of check-out. You are encouraged to ask questions and share your own point of view, but always with respect for the person who has volunteered their time.
- The “human book” can choose to discontinue a loan and return to the Library, if they feel so inclined.
- You are encouraged to ask questions, but don’t stray too far from the book topic.
- Conversations are confidential. Do not quote “books” unless you have received permission.
Useful Hints for Readers:
- Consider asking for a business card or contact information if you would like to keep in contact with a “human book."
- Treat your dialogue like a normal conversation. Don’t worry too much about making a good impression or asking the “right” questions.
- If you had a good experience, encourage your friends to participate, or loan out another book.
Sample Questions:
- What compels you to tell your story?
- What is the greatest obstacle that you have overcome?
- If you had once piece of advice, what would it be?
- How did you get to where you are today?
- Was there one event that had a great impact on you?
- Can you talk about your personal journey or path?
