Introduction

This page lists selected major microfilm and microfiche sets at American University Library. Most can be considered primary sources and historical documents. Many of these titles are also listed in different AU Library Subject Guides.

Omitted from this guide are all theses and dissertations.  With the exception of a few notable historical publications, most individual book, journal, magazine and newspaper titles are also omitted.

Tip 1: Before using these microforms, Google these titles to make sure they have not been digitized and are free of charge on the Web. Also check the AU catalog to see whether other Washington Research Libraries Consortium members have a digitized version of these titles in their collections.

Tip 2: Many of these microfilm and microfiche sets are accompanied by a guide or finding aid. A microform guide lists what material is in each reel or fiche, similar to a table of contents. Many guides also include a subject index. Look at a guide first to determine whether the microform set has the information or document you seek. If available, the guides (print or online) are either listed on this page or indicated in the catalog record.

Location

All the microforms in this guide are located on the Lower Level of Bender Library

Assistant with mircoform

The Interlibrary Loan (ILL) unit of the library is responsible for assisting with the microform collection.  Microform service is provided by ILL from the first floor Circulation and Course Reserves desk.

If the exact citation is known, AU students, faculty and staff may request articles via ILL.  ILL staff will scan the article and upload it to their My Library Account.

If an exact citation is not known, or you wish to peruse microform, please contact Shane Hickey (shickey@american.edu) to set up an appointment to ensure that staff will be available to assist.
